LANDMARK TRIALS

  • Know the studies that changed when—and where—we operate
  • THE EVIDENCE TIMELINE
  • 2006 — GPi dystonia — Sham-controlled: significant motor improvement
  • 2008–10 — CSP 468 / COMPARE — STN vs GPi: target-specific trade-offs
  • 2013 — EARLYSTIM — Earlier STN DBS improved QoL vs medical therapy
  • 2016 — NSTAPS 3-y — STN: greater off-motor improvement; more medication reduction
  • 2019 — VIM long-term — Benefit persists, but habituation / disease progression matter
  • 2024 — VIM vs PSA RCT — Comparable tremor reduction; PSA lower intensity + selected advantages
  • Teaching point: trials define probabilities and trade-offs; they do not replace phenotype-based target selection.
