Original lecture slide 23, STN programming, showing motor, tremor, fluctuation and dyskinesia panels with the practical programming logic list

STN PROGRAMMING

  • Motor benefit, medication strategy, and side-effect control
  • MOTOR — bradykinesia, rigidity
  • TREMOR — rest tremor
  • FLUCTUATION — OFF time
  • DYSKINESIA — often improves with medication reduction
  • STN: PRACTICAL PROGRAMMING LOGIC
  • START — Choose the contact with the best clinical response
  • AMPLITUDE — Increase gradually while monitoring adverse effects
  • PULSE WIDTH — Consider shorter PW when side effects limit amplitude
  • FREQUENCY — Adjust according to symptom phenotype and response
  • MEDICATION — Reassess dopaminergic therapy after DBS optimization
  • PEARL — STN programming is a balance between motor benefit and spread into nearby structures.
